The Revalidation Support Unit – Revalidation Roadshows have been an integral part of delivering CPD and support to all doctors (until recently primarily GPs) on their appraisal and revalidation. The Roadshows are delivered across Wales at various locations with an open invitation sent to all doctors to attend.

The first Revalidation Roadshows were run in 2006. It focused on the implications of the Good Doctors, Safer Patients Report for revalidation, appraisal and CPD. These events were held in Llandudno, Swansea, Cardiff and Carmarthen.

Since then, a range of events such as 2010: ‘Towards Revalidation’ and 2010: ‘Paving the route to revalidation’ have been organised by the Unit to provide vital updates and interactive workshops on appraisal and revalidation.

More recently, the Revalidation Roadshows were held in late-2012 at various venues across Wales. The aim of these roadshows was to provide doctors with an update regarding revalidation and focus doctors and Designated Bodies on what they need to do in preparation for the launch of revalidation.

Revalidation Roadshows 2014

The roadshows this year were held in February and March at 5 venues across Wales. They included Parc-y-Scarlets Llanelli, Newport YMCA Conference Centre, Bridgend Postgraduate Centre, Llandudno Venue Cymru and Wrexham Postgraduate Centre.

The aims of the Roadshows were:

On the whole, attendance at these events was very good. The table below shows the attendance figures for each event:

The excellent turnouts in Llanelli and Bridgend are particular highlights. 75% of the total attendees work in secondary care. This suggests that these roadshows were particularly useful for secondary care doctors keen to explore the aims mentioned above and seek clarification on aspects of appraisal and revalidation in Wales.

4 workshops ran in the afternoon of each roadshow which followed updates from the Unit, GMC and local HB in the morning. The workshops included:

The first two workshops were very well attended at each event. Although the other workshops did not prove to be as popular, the patient and colleague feedback workshop was well attended in Wrexham and the whole practice appraisal workshop was well attended in Llanelli.
